Cold walls, draughty lofts, high energy bills - these are all too common in UK homes with poor insulation. The Great British Insulation Scheme gives eligible homeowners and private tenants the chance to install top insulation measures (loft, cavity wall, external wall etc.) totally free, backed by the UK government until March 2026.
You must meet the eligibility criteria for one of two groups to qualify for GBIS:
Low Income Eligibility Group – for households receiving certain benefits or meeting certain criteria.
General Eligibility Group (GEG) – For homes with lower energy efficiency in certain council tax bands (EPC D and below), even if they are not receiving benefits.
Note: Social housing and privately rented homes may face additional restrictions or different eligibility criteria. Always check local variation.
Under GBIS, eligible homes can receive one major insulation measure (sometimes more) such as:
You can check your eligibility by submitting basic information about your property, income/benefits and EPC rating.
An approved installer will visit your home and assess the insulation options available.
If you are eligible, your installer or supplier can confirm whether or not the cost will be covered in full or if a small contribution is required (especially for the general eligibility group).
An approved installer performs work and monitors for quality, compliance with building regulations and scheme.
You’ll have a warmer home, lower energy bills and a reduction in carbon emissions.
