Get Free Insulation for Your Home through Great British Insulation Scheme

Make your home warm during winters by upgrading home insulation for free!

Cold walls, draughty lofts, high energy bills - these are all too common in UK homes with poor insulation. The Great British Insulation Scheme gives eligible homeowners and private tenants the chance to install top insulation measures (loft, cavity wall, external wall etc.) totally free, backed by the UK government until March 2026.

What is GBIS Scheme?

The Great British Insulation Scheme is a government initiative that was launched in 2023. It has a budget of Ā£1 billion and aims to improve energy efficiency for the most energy-inefficient homes in England, Scotland, and Wales. The scheme works in conjunction with the Energy Company Obligation Scheme (ECO4), but focuses on insulation rather than a “whole house” upgrade.

Why is GBIS important?

Many UK homes are still rated EPC D or worse, meaning they lose heat, cost more to run and often leave occupants cold and uncomfortable.
Insulating your home properly can save hundreds of pounds each year in energy bills, reduce carbon emissions and improve comfort and health.
GBIS targets some of the hardest-to-treat homes and helps fill gaps left by other schemes by widening eligibility and simplifying insulation upgrades.
Who can get support under GBIS?

You must meet the eligibility criteria for one of two groups to qualify for GBIS:

Low Income Eligibility Group – for households receiving certain benefits or meeting certain criteria.

General Eligibility Group (GEG) – For homes with lower energy efficiency in certain council tax bands (EPC D and below), even if they are not receiving benefits.

Key eligibility factors include:

Note: Social housing and privately rented homes may face additional restrictions or different eligibility criteria. Always check local variation.

What insulation measures are covered?

Under GBIS, eligible homes can receive one major insulation measure (sometimes more) such as:

Loft insulation (or loft insulation top-up)

Loft insulation (or loft insulation top-up)

Cavity wall insulation

Solid wall insulation (internal or external)

Under-floor insulation / solid-floor insulation

Room-in-roof, flat roof, pitched roof insulation
